Ice Road Trip - Pictorial

Temp: -11°C
Sunlight - 10.24 hours

We took a little trip up the ice road today. It’s something we’ve done a few times before, but we just wanted to get out of the house for a few hours and I was too lazy to actually walk anywhere.

I am also too lazy to write much in the blog today, so you get pictures. Here they are:

A random shot looking east from sightly west of the middle of the Mackenzie River (frozen, of course).

Another random shot looking East across the Mackenzie This time I am on the West bank of the river. The hills on the other side of the river pretty much mark the East bank. As you can tell it's a very large river. That's Lorie and Ripley there in the foreground to give you an indication of scale. From this distance, you can't even see the Jeep.

Some cottages at the base of the hills there. The folks with cottages on the Mackenzie just love this time of year because it is so easy and relatively inexpensive to get to the cottage. This is also the time of year that they take any large items to the cottage - like furniture or lumber. It's much easier to take them in a truck than in a boat.

Another shot of Lorie standing on the river apparently upset that Ripley won't do as he is told. You don't want to get her to the point that the hands are on the hips! Bad things can happen!

An example of the type of drifts that build up. This snow might look soft and fluffy, but it almost as hard as concrete in places. When you walk across it, you don't even leave footprints in places - it's that hard.

Here's some softer stuff and a shot of the Jeep back on the iceroad - basically in the middle of the Mackenzie River.

Another shot of the Mackenize - this one looking North towards Tuk.

That's all for now.

Cheers!

  • nice pics. I love looking at photo's of snow scenes. At least you have some trees and bushes to look at. I just got back from Iqaluit not a tree or bush to be seen there, just cold cold barren land. Yes, I know all about what happens when Lorie's hands go on the hips haha.
