The Best Laid Plans

Temp: -29°C
Sunlight - 9.00 hours

Well the plans are set for the weekend. We leave Inuvik early on Saturday morning for an estimated 400 kilometre trip on snowmobile. The trip will take us from Inuvik to Husky Lakes, north to Tuktoyaktuk, back to Husky lakes where we will spend the night in a cabin, and then back to Inuvik on Sunday. There will be three of us on snow machines making the trip. It will be part CASARA training exercise, part surveying exercise for the Canada Trail, part hunting trip. Should be fun.

We had originally planned to leave on Friday evening and make a two night trip of it, but availability of one of the party forced us to change those plans. It will still be a good trip though - perhaps a little ambitious. The weather has changed a little too. What was originally forecast as a weekend of low to mid minus twenties temperatures, has now changed to mid minus thirties. It should be a good test of cold endurance too.

I plan to take the digital camera and a good supply of batteries, but they won’t last long in the cold. The cold drags down batteries quickly. I have experimented with keeping them warm (usually by keeping them close to my body) with varying results. There are all sorts of funny thing like that associated with living in the north. Another example is trying to use a lighter in temps below minus forty – they just don’t work! Matches are a better choice.

That’s it for now – more tomorrow.

Cheers!
